Bleocel (Bleomycin) Injection is an anticancer cytotoxic antibiotic derived from Streptomyces verticillus.

It works by binding to DNA and causing strand breaks through free radical formation. This leads to inhibition of DNA synthesis and ultimately cell death, making it effective in various cancers.

Common:

• Fever, chills

• Skin reactions (hyperpigmentation, rash, erythema)

• Loss of appetite

• Nausea, vomiting

• Stomatitis (mouth sores)

• Hair loss (alopecia)

Serious / Severe:

• Pulmonary toxicity (pulmonary fibrosis, pneumonitis most serious side effect, dose-limiting)

• Hypersensitivity reactions (anaphylaxis, rash, urticaria)

• Severe mucositis

• Liver and kidney dysfunction (rare but possible)

• Pulmonary Monitoring: Baseline chest X-ray and pulmonary function tests; monitor regularly (risk increases with cumulative dose >400 IU).

• Renal Function: Dose adjustment may be required in kidney impairment.

• Elderly Patients: Increased risk of lung toxicity.

• Pregnancy & Breastfeeding: Contraindicated risk of fetal harm.

• Oxygen Therapy: Use with caution may worsen lung toxicity.

• Drug Interactions: Concurrent use with other pulmonary toxic agents (e.g., cyclophosphamide, G-CSF) increases risk.
