Abamune Tablet contains Abacavir, a nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NRTI) used in the treatment of HIV-1 infection. It works by blocking the activity of reverse transcriptase, an enzyme crucial for viral replication, thereby reducing viral load and improving immune function.

It is usually prescribed as part of a combination antiretroviral therapy (ART) for effective management of HIV.

Indicated for treatment of:

• Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV-1) infection in adults and children (as part of combination therapy)

• Reduction of HIV viral load and improvement of CD4+ cell counts

5. Side Effects

Common:

• Headache, nausea, vomiting

• Diarrhea, abdominal pain

• Fatigue, malaise

• Rash, fever

Serious (rare):

• Hypersensitivity reaction (HSR) potentially life-threatening; symptoms include fever, rash, gastrointestinal and respiratory symptoms

• Lactic acidosis with hepatomegaly

• Liver dysfunction

• Exacerbation of hepatitis B (in co-infected patients after discontinuation)

6. Precautions

• HLA-B*5701 screening is mandatory before initiation to avoid risk of hypersensitivity reaction

• Discontinue immediately if hypersensitivity reaction is suspected; do not re-challenge

• Use with caution in patients with liver disease, renal impairment, or cardiovascular risk factors

• Monitor liver function, renal function, and viral load regularly during therapy

• Should not be used as monotherapy; always in combination with other antiretroviral agents

• Safe sex practices and adherence to therapy are essential to prevent resistance and transmission
